Financial Support for Students


Thomas Whitham Sixth Form will subsidise the cost of a bus pass provided by Transdev and Lancashire County Council for 16 – 18 further education students.

A contribution of £50 for a Burnley termly pass or £60 for a Lancashire termly pass will be required per term for administration costs in processing bus passes and all passes are subject to availability and an attendance rate of 90% or above. Students must live over 1 mile away from the Sixth Form to qualify for the subsidy.

Free Meals

Thomas Whitham Sixth Form will provide a free meal to the value of £2.40 per day of timetabled study for students who are disadvantaged as defined by the students being in receipt of, or having parents who are in receipt of specific benefits:

All learners aged 19 years old and under who require childcare support can access 100% from ‘Care to Learn’.

Guaranteed Bursary

A guaranteed Bursary of up to £1200 a year will be paid to the defined vulnerable groups of students.
Students are not entitled to claim for any additional financial assistance alongside this subsidy with the exception of Free School Meals. Further details are available from Student Services.

Discretionary Bursaries

A discretionary bursary of up to £300 is available to students where the:

  • Family’s total household income falls below £20,000 per year (This includes earned and unearned income eg. working and child tax credits, Universal Credit).

It is expected that students will use the grant so that they can fully participate and purchase uniform, books and equipment that they may have not necessarily have been able to purchase themselves. Terms and conditions apply in accordance with the financial support for Students Policy.

How do I apply?

Forms can be downloaded from the Sixth Form Website or picked up from the Student Services Office. Completed forms must be returned to the Student Services Office with supporting evidence.
Please send in photocopies and not the originals.

Olympic Bronze Medal winner Rio 2016 – Sophie Hitchon

Studied P.E., Biology, Human Biology and Food Technology at TWSF (2007-2009)

British hammer thrower. Former World Junior Champion, and current senior British record holder with a throw of 72.97 metres in the 2013 European Team Championships. Represented Team GB at London 2012.

Represented England in the hammer throw at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, winning gold.
